Worked example

A higher hourly rate is not automatically the better yearly deal

Compare a casual rate and permanent rate using realistic paid hours and weeks worked. A casual may receive a loading or casual rate but generally misses several permanent entitlements, including most paid leave. The calculator can compare income and tax; it cannot decide the value of reliable hours, paid time off or the correct award rate.

Check before relying on it

  • Use realistic rostered hours rather than the best recent week.
  • Allow for unpaid weeks, cancelled shifts and time away from work.
  • Check the applicable award or agreement for the real casual rate.
  • Compare paid leave, notice and stability as well as take-home pay.

What this page helps you answer

What this pay, tax or salary topic means in simple terms.

What number or setting to check next in the calculator.

Which assumption could change the answer most.

When to stop using a rough estimate and ask payroll, the ATO or a qualified adviser.

Compare annual income, not just hourly rate

A higher casual hourly rate can look attractive, but total yearly income depends on hours, weeks worked and unpaid time off.

Tax is based on income

The calculator can annualise hourly income so you can estimate tax and take-home pay across a year.

Award details are separate

Casual loading, penalty rates and allowances can depend on the award, agreement or contract.

Common questions

Does casual loading mean more take-home pay?

It can, if hours are steady. The trade-off is usually paid leave and job security.

Does this calculator check award rates?

No. It estimates income tax from the income you enter and does not validate award entitlements.
